Smoke Detectors with a Baby: Placement, Types, and Escape Plan
Everything about the legal requirement, the best smoke detectors, and an escape plan with your baby.
The Law: Smoke Detectors Are Required
Since July 1, 2022, it has been legally required in the Netherlands to have at least one smoke detector on every floor of your home. This requirement applies to all residences, both rented and owned, and is established in the Building Decree (Bouwbesluit). There is no specific fine for not having smoke detectors, but in the event of a fire, their absence can have consequences for your insurance and liability. It is not just about the law: a working smoke detector can literally make the difference between life and death. Smoke spreads faster than fire and is the primary cause of death in house fires. In a home without smoke detectors, you have an average of two minutes to escape after the fire is discovered; with smoke detectors, you get up to five extra minutes of warning time. Those extra minutes are crucial, especially when you have a baby or toddler who needs to be taken from bed and carried out. Therefore, invest not only in the minimum number but consider extra smoke detectors in strategic locations.
How Many Smoke Detectors Do You Need?
The legal minimum is one smoke detector per floor, but for optimal protection with a baby in the house, fire services advise more. At minimum, place a smoke detector in the hallway on each floor, preferably near the stairs because smoke rises through the stairwell. Additionally, a smoke detector in or directly near the nursery is strongly recommended. If the nursery is on a different floor than the parents' bedroom, consider also placing a smoke detector in the corridor between both rooms. In the kitchen, a smoke detector is less suitable due to false alarms from cooking fumes, but in the hallway just outside the kitchen is a good location. A common recommendation is: one in the hall per floor, one per bedroom, and one in the living room. For an average Dutch terraced house with three floors, this amounts to five to seven smoke detectors. The costs are manageable: a good optical smoke detector costs between 15 and 30 euros per unit.
Optical vs Ionization: Which Type is Better?
There are two main types of smoke detectors: optical (also called photoelectric) and ionization smoke detectors. Optical smoke detectors detect smoke by using a light beam that is interrupted when smoke particles enter the sensor. They are particularly good at detecting smoldering fires that slowly produce a lot of smoke. Ionization smoke detectors use a small amount of radioactive material to ionize air particles and are better at detecting fast, flaming fires. For home use, and certainly with a baby in the house, optical smoke detectors are the better choice. They give fewer false alarms from cooking fumes, steam from the bathroom, or dust, which is important because parents are otherwise inclined to turn off the smoke detector or remove the battery after repeated false alarms. Additionally, ionization smoke detectors are already banned in some European countries due to the radioactive material. The very best protection is provided by a dual-sensor detector that combines both technologies.
Smart Smoke Detectors: Are They Worth It?
Smart smoke detectors, such as the Google Nest Protect, Netatmo Smart Smoke Alarm, and Eve Smoke, offer extra functionality beyond the basic function of smoke detection. They send notifications to your phone when they detect smoke, they can be interconnected so all detectors in the house go off when one is triggered, and they give warnings when the battery is running low. For parents with a baby, the interconnection is particularly valuable: if smoke is detected on the ground floor, the detector on the bedroom floor also sounds, so you are immediately alerted. Some smart detectors also have a nightlight function and a motion sensor, handy for the walk to the nursery at night. The disadvantages are the higher price (60-120 euros per unit) and the dependency on wifi and an app. A smart smoke detector that is offline or whose app is not working, however, still functions as a regular smoke detector. If the budget allows, a smart system is an excellent investment for your family's safety.
Placement In and Around the Nursery
The smoke detector near the nursery deserves special attention regarding placement. Preferably mount the detector on the ceiling in the hallway directly outside the nursery door, rather than inside the nursery itself. This has two advantages: the detector catches smoke coming through the corridor (the most likely route) and you prevent the loud alarm from unnecessarily startling your baby during a false activation. Keep at least 50 centimeters distance from walls, corners, and lights to avoid dead air zones. Do not mount the detector directly above a door or window where air currents can disrupt smoke detection. If you choose a detector inside the nursery itself, place it on the ceiling on the opposite side from the crib. Test the detector monthly, but preferably when your baby is not in the room to avoid unnecessary fright. Many parents forget that dust and cobwebs can impair smoke detector function; vacuum the detector gently twice a year with a vacuum cleaner.
Smoke Detector Maintenance
- •Test every smoke detector monthly by pressing the test button. Mark a fixed day in your calendar.
- •Replace batteries annually, or choose a detector with a non-replaceable 10-year lithium battery.
- •Gently vacuum the detector twice a year to remove dust and cobwebs.
- •Replace the entire smoke detector after 10 years, regardless of whether it still works. The sensor degrades over time.
- •Never remove the battery due to false alarms. Move the detector or replace it with an optical model.
- •After a renovation, check that all smoke detectors are still in the right place and not covered by dust or paint.
Escape Plan with a Baby
A smoke detector warns you, but you also need to know what to do next. An escape plan is essential, and with a baby in the house this requires extra planning. Discuss with your partner who picks up the baby and who takes any other children. Determine two escape routes per bedroom: the normal route through the hallway and stairs, and an alternative route (for example through a window with a collapsible escape ladder). Keep slippers or shoes and a coat near the crib so you can get outside quickly. Agree on a meeting point outside the house, for example at the lamppost or at the neighbors. Practice the escape plan at least twice a year. With a baby, the first priority is always: grab the child, leave the house, call 112. Never go back inside for belongings, pets, or your phone. An escape plan may sound excessive, but in the panic of a nighttime fire, having thought ahead is the difference between chaos and controlled action.
CO Detectors: The Forgotten Relative of the Smoke Detector
A carbon monoxide (CO) detector is often forgotten but is at least as important as a smoke detector in homes with gas appliances. Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless gas released during incomplete combustion in central heating boilers, gas heaters, and gas stoves. Babies are extra vulnerable to CO poisoning because they breathe faster and have a lower body weight, meaning the concentration in the blood reaches dangerous levels more quickly. Place a CO detector in every room with a gas appliance and in the hallway near the bedrooms. Unlike smoke detectors, you mount CO detectors at breathing height, approximately 1.5 meters high on the wall. A CO detector costs between 20 and 40 euros and lasts five to seven years. Additionally, have your central heating boiler and any gas water heater serviced annually by a certified installer; this is the best prevention against CO leaks. In the Netherlands, multiple deaths from CO poisoning occur each year, often in situations that could have been prevented with a simple detector.

The investment in smoke detectors and CO detectors is one of the cheapest and most effective safety measures you can take for your family. For less than 100 euros, you can equip an average Dutch home with sufficient smoke detectors and a CO detector.
